About the role

The Marketing and Distribution Specialist plays a key role in supporting companies to design and implement innovative strategies that reach low-income markets. This position reports to the Country Director, Ethiopia, and contributes to Bopinc’s mission of driving inclusive innovation across diverse sectors.

Working across Bopinc’s project portfolio  including Agriculture & Nutrition, Renewable Energy, Circular Economy, and Micro-entrepreneurship, the Marketing and Distribution Specialist will help businesses develop and execute scalable market approaches that create sustainable impact.

The role involves independently managing specific project implementation tasks and ensuring that deliverables are of high quality, delivered on time, and within budget. Collaboration with project teams and partners will be essential to translate market insights into practical distribution strategies that strengthen access and inclusion across target markets.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting marketing and distribution projects targeting the Base of the Pyramid (BoP) in collaboration with our partners.

  • Conduct research and development on innovative products and services.

  • Develop and execute activation, demand creation, and behavior campaigns.

  • Support commercial and non-commercial organizations in setting up meaningful and relevant value propositions and sustainable business models using workshops, market research, and consultancy.

  • Monitor (immediate, intermediate) results of the BoP marketing interventions and provide regular, monthly reports on the progress and the impact of the activities

  • Contribute to Bopinc's global internal knowledge-sharing & learning meetings by sharing best practices.

  • Contribute to business development by connecting partners to the Partnerships team for new opportunities.

Qualifications 

  •  Bachelor's or (preferably) master's degree in Business, Marketing, Management, or a related field.

  • 4+ years of experience in Marketing, Sales, and Distribution to low-income consumers (business consultant, entrepreneurs, or similar).

  • Strong focus on low-income consumers and markets.

  • Understanding of marketing and distribution in Ethiopian BoP consumer markets.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse stakeholders: government, development players, large multinationals, and rural small entrepreneurs;

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and the Amharic  language

  • Affinity with the mission of Bopinc.

Key Skills and Competencies

  • Ability to plan, manage, and deliver project workstreams within scope, budget, and timelines.

  • Ability to create clear & concise project documentation, reports, and progress updates.

  • Strong understanding of marketing and distribution principles, including market segmentation, customer insights, branding, marketing mix, e-commerce, retail, and agent networks, with the ability to apply these in low-income markets.

  • Experienced in conducting market research, analyzing data, and translating insights into actionable strategies for inclusive businesses.

  • Skilled in diagnosing business challenges and designing innovative marketing and distribution solutions for low-income segments.

  • Experience in facilitating or supporting workshops and training sessions on inclusive marketing topics.

  • (Preferred) Experience in developing training materials or content for entrepreneurs and business leaders on inclusive marketing.

  • (Preferred)Strong understanding of behavioral change principles, strategies and campaigns.

  • Strong Communication skills: Ability to adjust language, tone, pace, and formality to suit different cultural contexts, educational backgrounds, and audiences.

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with internal teams, partners, and low-income communities.

  • Adaptability & Resilience: Ability to respond positively to changing priorities and challenges, seeking practical and constructive solutions.

  • Problem-Solving: Strong critical thinking and creativity to analyze complex issues and develop effective, innovative responses.
